Side Effects
Common Gastrointestinal Effects
The most frequently reported side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These symptoms are typically most pronounced during dose escalation and tend to diminish over time as your body adjusts.
Approximately 20-30% of patients experience nausea significant enough to consider discontinuation, though most cases are mild to moderate and resolve within the first few weeks of treatment.
Risk of Hypoglycemia
While GLP-1 peptides carry lower hypoglycemia risk than some diabetes medications, the risk increases when combined with insulin secretagogues or insulin itself. Patients should monitor blood sugar closely and work with healthcare providers to adjust other diabetes medications.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia include shakiness, sweating, confusion, rapid heartbeat, and hunger. Severe hypoglycemia requires immediate treatment with fast-acting carbohydrates.
Rare but Serious Considerations
Pancreatitis has been reported in patients taking GLP-1 peptides, though the causal relationship remains unclear. Patients with a history of pancreatitis should discuss risks carefully with their healthcare providers. Thyroid C-cell tumors have been observed in rodent studies, though human relevance is not established.
Gallbladder disease, including gallstones, occurs more frequently during rapid weight loss. Patients should be aware of symptoms including abdominal pain, fever, and jaundice.
