GLP-1 and GIP: Two Gut Hormones, Two Different Jobs
When you eat, your intestines release hormones that do much more than just digest food. Two of the most important are GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). These incretin hormones communicate with your pancreas, brain, and stomach to regulate blood sugar and appetite. Understanding how they differ matters when you're considering medication options.
GLP-1 comes from L-cells scattered throughout your small intestine and colon, while GIP is produced by K-cells concentrated in the duodenum, the first section of your small intestine. This location difference affects when and how much of each hormone gets released in response to meals.
Both hormones stimulate insulin release after eating, but they respond differently to various nutrients. GIP seems particularly sensitive to fat intake, while GLP-1 responds broadly to carbohydrates and proteins. This distinction becomes relevant when you understand how pharmaceutical versions of these hormones are designed.
GLP-1 slows gastric emptying as one of its primary actions, helping you feel fuller longer. GIP's effect on stomach motility is weaker and more variable. Additionally, GLP-1 suppresses glucagon secretion more effectively, which reduces glucose production by your liver. Both hormones work together to manage post-meal blood sugar, but their mechanisms differ in important ways.
